Why I'll Only Spec Casablanca Now (And 3 Brands I Avoided First)

I won't spec any other ceiling fan brand for my projects now. Here's why I made that choice—and the expensive mistakes that drove it.

Look, I'm not saying Casablanca is perfect. No fan is. But after seven years handling orders for commercial and residential properties, I've made enough expensive mistakes to know what matters. And what matters is support and consistency—not flashy features or the lowest price tag.

My First Year Mistake: The Hunter Disaster

In 2017, fresh into the role, I spec'ed Hunter fans for a 12-unit apartment renovation. Looked great on paper. Decent price. Familiar brand. What could go wrong?

Everything, apparently. Six months in, three units had wobble issues. Another two had remote pairing problems. The contractor was furious. The property manager was on my back every day. I spent weeks coordinating replacements, and we still had unhappy tenants.

That mistake cost me roughly $2,400 in redo labor, replacement units, and my credibility with that client. I still cringe thinking about it.

After that, I took a hard look at what we actually needed from a ceiling fan, and Casablanca kept coming up for all the right reasons.

Argument 1: Parts Availability is a Nightmare with Most Brands (Not Casablanca)

If you've ever tried to find a specific replacement part for a five-year-old fan from a major brand, you know the pain. It's absolutely maddening.

I've had to scrap entire orders because a single capacitor went out and the manufacturer had discontinued the model. Or the pull chain broke and the part just wasn't stocked anywhere. In one case, a $40 part delay held up a $12,000 renovation by two weeks.

The most frustrating part of this: you'd think big brands would have parts support sorted. They don't. I've seen this with Emerson and Minka Aire especially. Once a model is two or three years old, good luck.

Casablanca is different. Their parts catalog is extensive. They still support fans from a decade ago. I've ordered replacement blades, light kits, and even entire motor housings for older models. It's not always instant, but the parts are available. That's huge for property managers and contractors who need to maintain units for years, not months.

Argument 2: Design Variety that Actually Matches Different Spaces (Not Just Looks)

I have mixed feelings about the whole "design-forward" trend in ceiling fans. On one hand, yes, aesthetics matter. On the other, some brands prioritize looks over function in a way that compromises performance.

With Casablanca, the variety isn't just decorative—it's practical. Their Stealth line is perfect for low ceilings. The Wisp series works well in modern, minimalist spaces. The Low Profile models are solid for rooms where headroom is tight. And the Zephyr line? That's my go-to for larger living areas where you actually want air movement, not just a pretty fixture.

Now, here's where the honest limitation kicks in: Casablanca isn't the cheapest option. If your budget is ultra-tight, you might find a lower upfront price with Hunter or a basic Emerson model. But I've learned the hard way that the cheapest upfront price often isn't the cheapest total cost. That $89 Hunter fan? When you factor in the callbacks, the part hunting, and the tenant complaints, it's way more expensive than the $250 Casablanca that just works for years.

For my projects, I'd rather spec a fan that's built to last and has support available, even if it costs more initially. It's a total cost of ownership decision, not a purchase price decision.

Argument 3: Reliability You Can Count On (But Not Guarantee)

I won't pretend every Casablanca fan is perfect. We've had a few issues over the years. But the failure rate is significantly lower than what I've seen with other brands. And when something does go wrong, the support team actually helps. I can't say that for some competitors where the response is basically, "buy a new fan."

I've personally documented this: In the past 18 months, we've caught 47 potential issues using our pre-install checklist—things like missing parts, incorrect model numbers, or damaged packaging. Of those, only 3 were with Casablanca. The rest were from other brands. That's a 6% problem rate for Casablanca vs. something like 25% for some others.

Now, that's not a scientific study—it's just our data. But it matches what I hear from other contractors and property managers.

But What About the Price Objection?

I hear it all the time: "But Casablanca costs more. How do you justify that to clients?" Fair question.

Here's my answer: I don't justify the upfront cost. I justify the total cost. And I show the math.

A $200 Casablanca fan that lasts 10 years with no issues? That's $20 per year. A $100 fan from another brand that needs replacement or repair every 3-4 years? That's $25-$33 per year, plus the hassle and downtime. The numbers speak for themselves.

Plus, there's the certainty factor. When I spec a Casablanca, I'm relatively confident I won't get a call next month about a wobble or a dead remote. That confidence is worth something. It's worth my reputation, and it's worth my client's peace of mind.

The Bottom Line

I spec Casablanca because my experience has proven that consistency, parts support, and real-world reliability matter more than the lowest bid. I've made the mistake of chasing price. I've paid for it. I won't do it again, and I won't recommend it to anyone else in this business.

This was accurate as of February 2025. The fan market moves fast—pricing, model availability, and features change. Confirm current specs and pricing before making any big purchase decisions. But if you're looking for a brand that supports its products and its customers over the long haul, Casablanca is where I'd start.
